my costume flop…

a while back i mentioned that i was working with a lot of tulle for my costume.
and by a lot i mean A LOT! ( 85+ yards!! = 255+feet!!!!)
i was going for a look similar to this; and it started off as a success…but when it was all said and done i wasn’t fully thrilled with it.
truthfully, it isn’t horrible – maybe you wouldn’t even consider it a flop, but i just couldn’t wear it.
let me show you {i’m a little blurry in these pictures}:

see…it doesn’t look that bad right?
well what had happened was… 😉
i had originally bought tulle that was on a spool and not wide at all, nice thin strips which are excellent for making a MASSIVE tutu. the problem i ended up creating was when i bought MORE tulle and i didn’t really cut them into thin strips. I figured that it would look excelent to have thicker pieces in the mix. i was wrong. when i knotted the bigger pieces onto the elastic – it looked HORRIBLE. Why didn’t i just un-knot them and cut them smaller and fix the problem? oh you know, i had already glued them down. 🙁 🙁 🙁
So in order to fix the problem i needed to cut it all off the elastic, re-tie every piece (that is a lot of pieces), and cut the bigger pieces and re-tie those. i didn’t have time to do that before the party, so i went with plan B (which you’ll see soon).
Maybe this picture will show you how bad the large knots were, i mean the ribbon i had glued down wouldn’t even stay over them…womp womp. Also with the large knots it made me look huge – not flattering at all – and who wants to wear something that isn’t flattering?!

so i’m hoping to fix the tulle skirt (because i don’t want to waste it!) and use it in some photo shoots that i have imagined for winter. overall – i’m happy i tried something new, it definitely made me learn to SLOW DOWN before busting out my glue gun.

have you learned any lessons in costume making (or making anything)? are you like me and just power ahead without realizing, oh that could be a mistake…? yeah – lesson learned.

I feel like I have a disaster any time I try and use tulle. Just not meant to be for me! Yours looks good though!
