Edisto Island is one of my favorite places.
I’ve grown up going to the quiet beaches, rolling in the pluff mud, and making memories with my family for years. I’ve spoken about Edisto a few times on the blog before and get ready, because you’re going to be hearing A LOT more about it!
Ocean Shade is a place my family has been making memories for years. My grandparents co-owned a beach house with some of their friends and every year for a week in the summertime my family would pack this home to the gills and just do life together. Days spent wading in the water, reading books in chairs, dancing on the beach. We would walk back to the house (only 2 blocks from the beach!) and grab extra snacks / drinks / some AC and then head right on back out to enjoy the sand! Our nights are full of board games, telling stories, laughing, and some arguing because y’all it’s a lot of family! 😉
Back in 2017 I posted that the beach house was going to be sold. It was such a hard realization that this place that holds so many memories was no longer going to be in our family. I remember back when it first was listed for sale I talked to Eddie about possibly buying it / buying into it. He wasn’t against it but it just wasn’t right for our family and no one else was really willing to do it either so I let that dream die.
Well, a year went on and it wasn’t sold.
I started talking to some of my family about really being passionate about keeping this home IN the family. I didn’t think everyone would be on board, but sure enough, some where. Fast forward through all the behind-the-scenes details and here is the news…

We now part-own this beach house.
I’m kind of still in shock and I don’t think it’s hit me that this is where we are in life with all the good and all the risk. While this was an easy decision (sentimental value and hopefully investment value), it wasn’t without weighing all the risk that comes in co-owning a vacation rental property.
This house was built in the late 1980s and that means it. is. dated.
We’ve been spending some weekends getting out there to do a few small updates before summer season starts. This will be a SLOW process, one that will require us saving some $$ to update room by room but it’s happening!
We actually just took down ALL THE WALLPAPER in the kitchen and painted it white! We got a new daybed for upstairs and are trying to give the master bedroom a refresh before new guests start arriving! Eddie and i also brought in our old sofa / love seat to provide more comfortable seating and my family loves how comfy it all is!
If you know me at all you know that I’ve made a “House Project List” (like I did for my own home!) of everything I would love to see updated in this home and I’ll be sharing that for another time!
BUTTTTT to help give you an idea of what we’re working with, here are a few sneak peeks of Ocean Shade circa 1980/1990s ;). I also want to be clear that even though yes it’s dated, I’m not throwing it under the bus, regardless of the inside decor / look it’s a place that I hold near and dear to my heart. It’s been a home full of memories for us and for others who have vacationed here! I can’t wait to take y’all on this journey with us!
