This morning at church we talked about being the salt + light in our world. We had such great discussion with our peers and many moments of conviction within.
Then my husband said something that sent waves of resonation within me like a rock cresting the surface of a lake.
“You don’t pay attention to a small amount of darkness in a room, like a shadow. But in a room full only of darkness, the smallest amount of light will be super noticeable.”
That small amount of light will be a beacon.
A lighthouse.
A sense of rescue.
That’s who Jesus is to us that know Him personally; and we’re encouraged, commanded, to be that light in this world of darkness to those who don’t know Him.
As a wife and mother, this felt like pin pricks all over my heart. It is so easy for me to get caught up in everything that comes with caring for my husband, my child, our home. I can feel suffocated by unrealistic expectations that I’ve put on myself or bought-into through social media. Instead of reflecting on who God has called me to be, especially for my child. Is he seeing salt & light daily? Or is he seeing bitterness, overwhelm, and overlooking the Lord’s goodness? Motherhood often pulls us outward…Scripture calls us back inward.
Matthew 5:13-16
“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men. You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. ‘Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven.’”
“YOU ARE” – It’s a statement, an identity. It leaves no question on what we’re called to be. If you have a personal relationship with Jesus…are you being salt? Are you being light in this ever present darkness?
