Shevy & I woke up early to go book two more nights at our flat in Leath and then headed up the street to one of the markets. They have markets everywhere in this area; by ‘market’ i mean “a gas station set up minus the gas and with more grocery items”…did that make sense? We needed to pick up some milk, tea, eggs, and something quick for breakfast.
We ended up hopping on the bus to take us to City Center to explore the heart of Edinburgh.
We toured some gift shops since i was looking for a gift for my brother that tied to our clan or tartan. I came across some really awesome cuff links that had the Grant clan “stand fast” emblem on it, but at 30 pounds…yikes i couldn’t really pocket something that expensive that early in the trip, so we kept looking.
Lunch time rolled around and we slipped into a pub/restaurant named “Miter”…oh.my.gosh.delicious.
Hannah & I ended up getting the venison sausage and mash, and it came with onion rings on top.
As an appetizer we got some Brie cheese with this amazing jam spread…my mouth is still watering.
Shevy & Beverly ended up getting this amazing fruit cider, Kopparberg {strawberry & lime}, that we all ended up loving. After doing some research i’ve found that only one place in Charleston carries it; so now i can get my UK fix of cider whenever i want!
After lunch we continued to explore the city. Down alleys, admiring the buildings, reading signs for monuments. At one point while we were standing in front of this gorgeous church we heard glass breaking. After a few minutes a group of drunk teenagers (it’s like 3 in the afternoon mind you) appear and continue to throw glass bottles at the church and surrounding monuments. There were no police around…ever. It was really sad to see teenagers that…lost, especially in public and no one even attempted to say anything to them.
…Speaking of sad teenagers…
We ended up walking through a park and stopped to talk to a street vendor selling his photography and celtic designs on jewelry and wood pieces. The guy was pleasant but came across as if he was not very fond of Americans. While we were talking to him there was a group of teenagers sitting on a rock a little ways away. At one point a girl, wearing see-through pants and over-drawn eyebrows, came up and started mocking him while he was talking to us. I was really taken aback not only by how rude she was, but how normal this seemed to be for him. She kept walking away and coming back throughout our conversation. I was overlooking the art and she came over and started mocking how i was standing; if i moved…she repeated it; she kept laughing at me and then calling out something in another language to her friends and then would laugh again. I’m not normally a silent person but i was so frustrated, broken hearted, and just over it that i didn’t say a thing to her.
She looked strung-out and just…a mess. I really felt bad for her and her friends; but that doesn’t justify how incredibly rude they were all being not only to people passing around but to the guy attempting to make a living; he said this happened all the time.
We ended up catching our bus back to the flat and spent the night watching some BBC, laughing, talking, and resting. We ended up falling in bed way past midnight…because of the sun.
Their daylight lasts until 10:30 at night and comes back up at 4 in the morning! We kept thinking it was earlier than it actually was; and that was the end of our first full day in Scotland!
If you missed part one of the adventure, check it out.
LOVED reading this and seeing the pics!! WE LOVED Scotland!!!
These pictures are gorgeous!
So sad about that girl being so rude. That really is terrible. I feel badly for that vendor. I can't imagine what rude people he must deal with!
On a happier note – gorgeous pictures! I'm pretty sure this will be a theme through all your recaps, but seriously – beautiful!
Love the pictures! 🙂 Things ae definitely WAY sad over there. And honestly, you're not the first one to notice. A friend of mine was over there a few years ago and he noticed the exact same attitude. It's actually scary….That's Scotland's next generation!!! And we're on our way, right behind them.
To end on a happier note, glad you've got a place to remind you of such an awesome trip right there in Charleston! 🙂
Wow, these pictures are beautiful! So sad about those rude teenagers, glad you didn't let it ruin your trip.
The fruit cider sounds yummy… I've only ever heard of apple cider… they need to bring some more cider options over to the US!
What a magnificent first day! It is so heart breaking about those teenagers! How lost they must be! I'm excited to hear more about your trip! 🙂
Oooh man. SO amazing!!
So beautiful!!
Oh your trip looks wonderful! I soooo want to travel. Haha I have a friend who lived in Glasgow but she hated it. It has quite the reputation. But she was diet broke when she lived there so that colored things a bit for her.

looks absolutely lovely!
I loved this post! Minus the part about the strung out teenagers. It's sad that they're in that situation and I'm sorry you had to deal with them.
So amazing! Minus the heathens
SO fun!!! I love the photos
The story about the teens saddens me and infuriates me at the same time. The enemy has those kids bound up in his lies.
